Hall Pass is a digital hall-pass system for a classroom: a shared iPad students tap to sign in and out, and a phone view a teacher uses to monitor it. This page explains what information the app handles, where it's stored, and who can see it.
A teacher sets up Hall Pass for their classroom: entering student names, optionally adding a photo for each, and choosing a few settings. Students only ever tap their own name or photo — they never type anything themselves. That roster, along with a live record of who's out and a log of past trips, is stored in the app's cloud backend (Firebase, run by Google) so that the classroom iPad and the teacher's phone can stay in sync. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics, and nothing is sold or shared with anyone outside of running the app itself.
All of the following is entered by the teacher (never by a student) and stored in the app's cloud database, scoped to that one classroom:
This data is stored using Google's Firebase platform (Firestore for records, Firebase Storage for photos) and sent to and from the device over an encrypted connection. It is not used for advertising, not analyzed for any purpose beyond running the app's own features, and not sold or shared with any third party.
Unlike some apps, this data is not limited to the device it's used on. Because the classroom iPad and the teacher's phone need to stay in sync, roster and log data lives in the cloud rather than only on one device — and it is not automatically deleted if the app is uninstalled from a device. Each classroom gets a random, private join code when it's first set up. That code is what connects a specific iPad and a specific teacher phone to one classroom's data. There are no user accounts or passwords — the join code itself is the thing that keeps one classroom's roster and log private from every other install of the app. Treat it like you would a shared door code: don't post it publicly.
The app does not include any analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting software, and does not share data with any third party for their own purposes. Its data is stored on Google's Firebase platform, which acts as the app's own backend infrastructure — governed by Firebase's own data-processing terms, not a separate recipient the data is disclosed to. The only other network activity is downloading the app and its updates through the Google Play Store, governed by Google's own privacy policy.
Hall Pass is built to be set up and administered by a teacher as part of running their own classroom, not marketed or distributed directly to children. A student's only interaction with it is tapping their own name or photo on a device the teacher controls — students never create an account, enter personal information themselves, or see any other student's data beyond what a teacher already displays on the shared classroom iPad. The app has no chat, messaging, social features, or user-generated content, and does not use children's information for advertising or any purpose beyond providing the hall-pass feature itself. To delete a single student's information: a teacher can remove that student from the roster at any time from within the Hall Pass app itself — no request needed.
To delete an entire classroom's information (roster, photos, and trip log): email nkzastrow@gmail.com from the account you'd like us to reply to, with the classroom's join code and a request to delete it. Deletion is completed within 30 days of the request. Once deleted, the data is removed from Hall Pass's database and is not kept anywhere else — there is no separate backup or archive it needs to be purged from.
Uninstalling the app by itself does not delete anything — the data doesn't live only on the device, so one of the two steps above is required.
Hall Pass is a tool for teachers and schools, and any information about a student is entered and controlled by that student's teacher as part of the school's own record-keeping — not collected directly from the student or used for any purpose beyond operating the app for that classroom.
